Welcome to the National Centre of Excellence and Advanced Research on Anemia Control (NCEAR-A). All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Centre for Community Medicine), New Delhi is committed to provide institutional support to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) for accelerating decline in prevalence of anemia through research and implementation. Anemia is a serious public health problem. In India, more than 50 per cent children, adolescent girls and pregnant and lactating women are affected with anemia. Distributing Iron Folic Acid tablets and biannual deworming to the target beneficiaries are the key strategies for reducing anemia prevalence as part of Anemia Mukt Bharat.

About Us

Organization :

Anemia Mukt Bharat 2018 was launched with the ambition of reducing the annual rate of anemia from one to three percentage points. In order to achieve this target, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) developed a 6x6x6 strategy (6 target groups, 6 interventions and 6 institutional mechanisms). Setting up NCEAR-A was one of the sixth institutional mechanisms. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Centre for Community Medicine) in house the NCEAR-A which is committed to provide technical support to the MoHFW for policy making, program guidelines and implementation of control of anemia in the country. NCEAR-A works in close collaboration with the MoHFW as well as partners working in the field of anemia. It is currently headed by Dr. Shashi Kant, Professor and Head, Centre of Community Medicine, All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Objectives :
                 NCEAR-A provides following support to the MoHFW:
1. Provide technical inputs with focus on multi-sectoral approach for policy making, program guidelines and program implementation for anemia control program in India.
2. Address operational research needs for anemia control in India.
3. To support program monitoring and evaluation including national surveys.
4. Act as an apex reference laboratory for screening and diagnosis of anemia at a national level.
5. Facilitate capacity building for anemia control program at state and national level.
6. Mentor and support the regional centres of excellence in anemia control.

About Anemia

Introduction :
Anemia affects 1.9 billion people or 42.6% of the world’s total population. It is a major public health problem in India and several other developing countries. In India, anemia affects more than 50% population across all vulnerable groups. All States and Districts in India are affected by anemia. It has significant consequences on human health and social and economic development.

Definition of Anemia :
Anemia is a condition in which the number of red blood cells and their oxygen-carrying capacity is insufficient to meet the body’s physiological needs.
